Re: Excuses
I'm still optimistic to be fair if payet or lanzini were on the field last night it would have been fairly comfortable. The ref was an absolute joke they was time wasting straight from the first whistle in the 2nd half and he did nothing about it. It's pretty obvious that we did not have a squad completely capable to compete on four fronts this season. Be calm we have had a lot worse as fans we are on a steady upward protectory COYI

Similar situation this time last season so fecking calm down and give it some rope.

Re: Excuses
We are going backwards because we can't even do the basics right like put players in their proper positions in games and buying a winger instead of a striker

Re: Excuses
If players are not good enough to keep possession of the ball and keep giving it to the opposition then you lose matches. Doesn't matter what pitch or stadium you play in it is the basics of football.

Re: Excuses
Going backwards?

We actually progressed a round further in the Europa League this year, than last.

In the Premier League, we are actually two points better off, than in the corresponding fixtures last season.

Re: Excuses
Backwards, forwards or standing still is irrelevant really.

We should have beat Astra comfortably. They were at our mercy last week but they went from Antonio missing an open goal to equalising and that turned the whole tie.

The worrying thing for me so far is that we don't look fit enough and are struggling towards the end of games. Looks a bit like pre-season was wasted.

Are we going backwards because we went far too far forwards last season?

We ARE going backwards by trying to stand still.

Re: Excuses
We aren't going backwards... we're just not going forwards as fast as we would like.

This time last season we were out of the EL at the hands of Astra but had also lost at home to Bournemouth.

We are actually two points better off compared to the same fixtures last season... lets not get carried away.

exactly lily the forward line situation was chronic before carroll pulled up and Ayew isn't an out and out striker anyhow
fingers burnt springs to mind

Re: Excuses
Bollocks to excuses, there are none, but there are reasons.

The main reason was we couldn't put the ball in the net. Same old same old. God knows we made enough clear chances, even with that patched up cautious selection.

and the players of course

there is no excuse for that shit

bilic needs a kick up the arse imo

Re: Excuses
Can everyone stop saying we have a small squad

Our squad was more then big enough to cope. We had several first team players out injured plus three of our best youngsters out on loan and still put a team out capable of winning

The squad was and has always been good enough and big enough to compete in the Europa

The manager and the players performance last night was why we lost

Re: Excuses

This obsession with progression is tiresome. Going backwards is hardly the end of the world. Will have the added bonus of getting rid of cunty fans.

Re: Excuses
Not the ideal outcome of my first time to the new stadium. In fact it was pretty sickening.

The ref didn't help, neither did their great defending/goalkeeping....which we helped when Antonio did a goal line clearance from their net (never seen anything like it). It just wasn't going in last night. After that and a few other decisions that went against us which could have grabbed us 2/3 goals, I knew it wasn't happening.

Antonio - see's so much of the ball but isn't intelligent enough to know what to do with it. Runs himself ragged for 60 minutes chasing the ball and running at defenders but rarely puts in that sweet cross to be met by one of our...erhermm...strikers. Frustrating player.

Valencia - shouldn't been seen in a WH shirt again. I don't doubt the lad has some desire but he needs to play in a country that suits him more, maybe somewhere in south America

Calleri - not seen much to get excited about yet. Bench warmer at best

Fletcher - brought something to the table when he came on. Showed skill, had ideas, held the ball up. Think he'd work well with another nippy striker to play off. He'll get goals if he gets game time and is better than anything we have right now.

Tore - absolutely awful. Time and time again you see him receive the ball, put his head down and just kick the ball in front of him like an 8 year old in a Sunday league team. What Bilic see's in him I don't know. Worrying.

Tore and Antonio kept swapping sides in the first half, does anyone know where they are meant to be playing? All the faith and hope we had in Bilic is slowly dwindling. Yes, he's had injuries to deal with but it tests your metal as a manager how you deal with those.

Pre-season aside, we've lost one and won one in the Prem and gone out of the Europa which if you as me is just a distraction because there are some good sides in there and we wouldn't have stood a chance. I can't see Southampton doing much either.

It's the disappointment of playing so badly and the feeling as though we as the fans are noticing things that are pretty obvious which Bilic isn't. Or he is but is being too stubborn to change it. The Antonio at right back thing, the insisting on playing Valencia thing (what he was expecting him to bring to the game when he came on I do not know), the playing with too many defensive midfielders thing, the faith he has in players who have not turned out to be very good. It's concerning but we can only wait and see.

Loved the OS though, it did feel a bit like going to a Baseball game and I don't see how we get any advantage being the home team there which is a big issue. Other teams won't be worried about coming there and it'll take a while before we settle and call it 'home'. I see what theyre doing with the club and applaud the ambition and direction they intend on taking us in but you need to back it up with investment in GOOD players, not loan deals, not 5 million here, 6 million there, even 20 million on lets face it quite an average winger (when we needed a striker).

Lets hope it gets better..

There's no denying the injuries are effecting us but we should have had enough to beat them lot.

The reality of team selection was..."if we keep it 0-0 we are through"...necessity musts from Bilic I guess, another nod to the small squad we have

Re: Excuses
We missed Noble as much as Lanzini or Payet last night. We were very short of a 'talker'- someone to spur the players on, kick arses and lead by example.

After what was said about Dimi and Lanz maybe playing a part in last night's game I was surprised to none of them even on the bench.

It all felt slow and aimless. Every player seemed to want to slow the game down with two or three touches.

The stadium is crying out for a top team and we're filling the field with tiny players. One 20 year old busting his bollocks showed how we should have grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. One player up for a European game in front of fifty thousand fans under the lights? That's a big worry.

Re: Excuses
"We didn't play good in the first half or with desire as a team. We were second best."

In August and we didn't play 'with desire'. That concerns me a lot more than missed chances and crap refs.
